OpenAI now lets companies and government offices in the UAE process their artificial intelligence data using local computer chips.
The popular artificial intelligence company OpenAI launched a major technology upgrade in the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.
The new service, called inference residency, allows businesses, schools, and government offices across the Emirates to run their artificial intelligence tools on computer chips located directly inside the country.
This update makes the United Arab Emirates one of only three places in the entire world, alongside the United States and Europe, where OpenAI allows organizations to keep both their stored files and their live artificial intelligence calculations inside national borders.
To understand why this launch is so important, it helps to look at how artificial intelligence works in everyday life. When someone asks a computer tool like ChatGPT a question, two main things happen. First, the question and answer are saved somewhere on a computer disk, which is called data storage.
Second, special computer chips called graphics processing units, or GPUs, do the heavy thinking to create the answer, which is called inference. In the past, even if a company stored its files in the United Arab Emirates, the actual thinking process had to travel across the ocean to giant computer centers in other countries. Now, both the storage and the live computer thinking stay entirely inside the Emirates.
Keeping digital information inside the country is a crucial requirement for many important organizations. Hospitals handling private medical records, banks managing people’s money, and government ministries working on national security cannot afford to let sensitive information cross international borders.
Local data protection laws in the United Arab Emirates require these groups to know exactly where their digital information goes at all times. By keeping all processing local, OpenAI makes it much easier for public institutions and regulated businesses to use modern artificial intelligence tools without breaking strict privacy laws.
Explaining the importance of this new development for local organizations, Farouk El Hamzawi, Head of Enterprise at OpenAI MENA, publicly stated, “Organizations across the UAE are adopting AI at a remarkable pace, supported by the Government’s clear long-term vision and commitment to technology leadership. With the launch of UAE Inference Residency, we are giving eligible customers greater control over where AI workloads are executed, building on our existing residency offerings and supporting institutions that need stronger regional assurances as they scale AI adoption.”

This move aligns directly with the government’s official strategy to make the nation a global leader in artificial intelligence under the National AI Strategy 2031. Over the past year, the use of ChatGPT has grown rapidly across the region, with nearly six out of every ten young adults using the software every week.
Major organizations, including national airlines, major property developers, top universities, and investment funds, are using these smart systems to write documents, speed up research, and automate daily office work.
By providing local computer processing power, OpenAI helps ensure that local businesses can grow safely and protect their private records. Farouk El Hamzawi emphasized this ongoing partnership, noting, “This is another important step toward broader compute residency in the UAE, and we look forward to continuing to support organizations across the public and private sectors as they build with AI.” For ordinary citizens and business owners, the message is simple: smart technology is becoming safer, faster, and more private by keeping digital computer work close to home.
