President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made a major decision regarding the future of education in Nigeria. He has appointed Professor Segun Aina as the new leader, or Registrar, of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
Professor Aina will take over from the previous boss, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, whose successful leadership officially ends on July 31, 2026. This new appointment has caused a lot of excitement across the country, signaling that JAMB is about to lean heavily into modern technology and digital innovation.
Who is Professor Segun Aina?
At just 39 years old (turning 40 in July 2026), Professor Aina is making history as the youngest person ever chosen to lead JAMB. But his age is only half the story; his background shows exactly why he was picked.
• A Tech Expert: He is a Professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.
• Highly Educated: He studied in the United Kingdom, earning a degree in Computer Systems Engineering, a Master’s degree in Internet Computing and Network Security, and a PhD in Digital Signal Processing.
• Deep JAMB Experience: Interestingly, Professor Aina actually started his journey with JAMB years ago as a youth corper during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year. He knows the organization from the ground up.
Before this big appointment, he spent over 15 years helping other major examination bodies, like NECO and NABTEB, update their computer systems and protect the security of their tests.
Why This Choice Matters for Students
JAMB is the body responsible for organizing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), the massive exam that determined whether students get into universities and polytechnics.
By putting a young computer engineering expert in charge, President Tinubu is sending a clear message: the future of Nigerian exams is completely digital.
“President Tinubu remains committed to building institutions that are efficient, transparent, and future-ready,” said Bayo Onanuga, the President’s spokesperson. He added that the country needs a mix of innovation and young leadership to move forward.
What Changes Can Students Expect?
While the previous head of JAMB, Professor Oloyede, did an excellent job cleaning up corruption and saving billions of Naira for the government, Professor Aina is expected to take JAMB to the next technological level.
Students and parents can likely look forward to:
• Better Exam Security: Using advanced computer programs to stop cheating and impersonation during the computer-based tests (CBT).
• Smoother Digital Portals: Fixing website crashes and making it easier for students to register for exams, check their results, and apply for university admissions online without stress.
• Faster Problem Solving: Using modern data systems to handle student complaints and rectify result errors much quicker than before.
By choosing a young, tech-savvy academic, the government is trying to ensure that Nigeria’s university admission system matches the fast-paced, digital world that young students already live in.
