At the heart of this success story is Dr. Emmanuel Efe Emefienim, CON, FCIB, the founding Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer who transitioned from a high-ranking executive role to build one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing financial institutions.
Dr. Emefienim is a veteran of the Nigerian financial sector with over 30 years of experience. Before embarking on the journey to establish PremiumTrust, he served as the Executive Director of Institutional Banking at Sterling Bank, where he was instrumental in driving the bank’s corporate and institutional growth between 2018 and 2022.
His academic foundation is rooted in the University of Benin, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology before pivoting to finance. He holds two Master’s degrees—one in Banking and Finance and another in Business Administration—providing him with the dual perspective of a technical strategist and a business leader.
PremiumTrust Bank officially launched operations in April 2022, starting with its first branch in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Unlike many new entrants that start with regional licenses, Emefienim’s vision was national from the outset.
Under his leadership, the bank secured a National Commercial Banking License from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in record time. Emefienim has often clarified that while he is the founder and driver of the vision, the bank was established alongside a group of diversified entrepreneurs who brought multi-sectoral expertise to the board.
Before reaching the C-suite, Emefienim honed his skills across several cornerstone institutions of Nigerian banking like Oceanic Bank (now Ecobank where he started his career in 1992 United Bank for Africa (UBA) where he served as a Manager in Commercial Banking. Fidelity Bank & Equitorial Trust Bank (ETB) where he occupied various leadership roles that shaped his understanding of the Nigerian market.
Since its inception, Emefienim has steered PremiumTrust Bank toward a niche of “Innovation and Speed.” The bank has become synonymous with sports development in Nigeria, serving as the lead sponsor for the Delta 2022 National Sports Festival and partnering with the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN).
