Standard Bank moves from testing artificial intelligence to training thousands of workers to use smart tools daily.

African financial giant Standard Bank is taking a big step forward by changing how its entire team uses smart computer programs for daily banking work.

Instead of just running small tests or treating artificial intelligence like a fun tool, the bank is making smart software a core part of its daily operations across all business departments.

By teaching thousands of workers how to use these digital tools to check documents, manage customer requests, and speed up loan services, the institution aims to offer faster and better help to millions of account holders.

The major strategic update was announced on August 18, 2026, across the company’s main headquarters in South Africa and regional banking hubs throughout Africa.

The move follows high rankings in international financial studies, where independent researchers placed Standard Bank at the very top of African banks for using smart technology effectively.

To keep this lead, the institution recently appointed a dedicated Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer to lead the daily rollout of smart tools across every single branch and office location.

The main reason for this big change is that banking is moving very fast, and customers no longer want to wait days for simple services.

Ordinary computer systems can be slow when processing thousands of forms or checking security details by hand.

By building an artificial intelligence system that works alongside human bank tellers and managers, the bank can spot errors quickly, stop account fraud, and answer client questions in seconds instead of hours.

Explaining why the company is shifting its entire setup toward smart technology, Chief Operating Officer of Standard Bank Group Margaret Nienaber stated, “AI is not optional; it will fundamentally change how clients interact with us, how work gets done, and how value is created”.

Outlining the bank’s long term plan to stay ahead in the market, Nienaber added, “We are elevating AI from a short-term productivity lever to a long term competitive capability across all four of our business units”.

Highlighting how staff members are already embracing these digital tools at work, the management team revealed that “more than 20,000 of our colleagues are already active AI users, and we continue to invest in the skills, capabilities and culture required to help our people win in an AI enabled future”.

Explaining how the company chooses its technology partners, Chief Information Officer and Chief AI Officer Jörg Fischer noted that “our AI strategy is not an ‘or’ strategy, it is an ‘and’ strategy,” emphasizing that “partnering with leading global hyperscalers and adopting an open architecture across best-in-class both open and closed AI models allows us to retain the flexibility to access innovation”.

By putting smart tools into the hands of tens of thousands of employees, Standard Bank is proving that artificial intelligence is no longer just for technology firms.

This widespread training ensures that everyday banking becomes simpler, safer, and much faster for families and small business owners across the African continent.
