Absa Group’s smart AI assistant reaches 1.6 million users as the bank increases its technology spending to R8.8 billion.

African financial services giant Absa Group has reached a major milestone as its smart artificial intelligence assistant now serves approximately 1.6 million customers across the continent.

The automated helper uses advanced conversational technology to understand everyday human speech, ask follow-up questions, and provide fast, personalized answers to common account questions.

By handling over 100,000 customer requests every single month, the smart computer program is changing how everyday people check their balances, manage money, and request account help directly from their mobile phones.

The official news update was released on August 20, 2026, following the publication of the bank’s half-year financial report from its headquarters in South Africa.

During the first six months of the year, Absa increased its total technology spending by 7 percent, reaching R8.8 billion.

This heavy investment spans the bank’s wide African network, supporting operations in South Africa, Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique, Nigeria, Seychelles, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.

The main reason for this large spending increase is that millions of account holders are choosing digital banking over walking into physical branches.

To serve a growing customer base of 13.4 million people safely and quickly, the bank must constantly upgrade its computer networks, strengthen online security against scammers, and store information securely in cloud data centers.

Installing smart automated helpers allows the bank to process small business loans in minutes, approve credit faster, and resolve customer issues without making people wait on phone lines for hours.

Explaining why modernizing computer systems is critical for serving customers, Absa Group Chief Information and Technology Officer Johnson Idesoh stated that “technology only matters when it changes the experience of customers and the performance of the business”.

Pointing out the real-world benefits achieved through these ongoing software upgrades, Johnson Idesoh highlighted that in H1 2026, we saw that impact clearly: SMEs can open accounts in minutes, customers are receiving faster credit decisions, digital lending is growing strongly, service channels are becoming more responsive, and our platforms continue to operate with resilience”.

Emphasizing that technology investments must deliver clear value to everyday account holders, company representatives confirmed that “Absa Group’s H1 2026 technology performance shows a clear shift from digital investment to measurable business and customer outcomes”.

By spending more money on smart software and cloud computing, Absa is ensuring that its daily banking services remain fast, safe, and simple for everyone.

Using artificial intelligence to handle routine customer questions frees up human staff to tackle complex financial needs, making everyday money management smoother for millions of families and business owners across Africa.
