Standard Bank Eyes Strategic Stake in OPay Ahead of IPO

Standard Bank Group, Africa’s largest lender by assets is in preliminary talks to acquire a minority stake in OPay ahead of the fintech’s highly anticipated international public listing. 

Standard Bank Group, Africa’s biggest bank is in talks to team up with Nigerian financial technology company OPay before OPay launches its shares for sale on the US stock market.

OPay is working with top global banks Citigroup, Deutsche Bank and JPMorgan Chase to prepare to sell its shares on the New York stock exchange later in 2026, according to Bloomberg.

Although SoftBank Group Corp and Sequoia Capital-backed OPay is aiming for a $4 billion valuation in its upcoming US initial public offering, the exact amount Standard Bank plans to invest and the size of the stake it wants to buy has not been revealed.

This potential deal comes after Standard Bank Group announced in June that it plans to step up its investments across Africa.
