OpenAI Launches GPT-Live, a Voice AI That Can Listen and Speak at the Same Time

OpenAI has introduced a new generation of voice AI designed to make conversations feel more natural. Instead of waiting for users to finish speaking, GPT-Live can listen, respond and hold fluid conversations in real time, bringing ChatGPT one step closer to human-like interaction.

OpenAI has officially launched GPT-Live, a new family of voice models that can listen and speak simultaneously. The launch includes GPT-Live-1 and GPT-Live-1 mini, with both models rolling out globally across ChatGPT on the web, iOS and Android.

Unlike traditional voice assistants, GPT-Live does not wait for users to stop talking before responding. Its full-duplex architecture allows it to listen and speak at the same time. The model can acknowledge users with short responses such as “mhmm” or “got it” while the conversation continues naturally.

The upgrade also makes conversations feel faster and more natural. Users can interrupt the AI, pause briefly without losing context and continue speaking without awkward delays. GPT-Live can even remain silent when needed before responding at the right moment.

OpenAI designed the model for more than casual conversations. GPT-Live can perform live translations, answer questions, search for information and complete complex tasks while maintaining a continuous voice conversation. More demanding requests automatically shift to GPT-5.5 in the background without interrupting the interaction.

The company has also expanded access. GPT-Live-1 becomes the default voice model for Go, Plus and Pro subscribers, while Free users receive GPT-Live-1 mini, a lighter version with the same conversational experience.

Safety remains a major focus. OpenAI says GPT-Live includes improved safeguards for crisis situations, age-appropriate responses for younger users and stronger protections against harmful interactions.

The launch reflects a broader shift in artificial intelligence. Leading AI companies are moving beyond chatbots that simply answer questions. They now want AI systems that can communicate naturally, understand interruptions and assist users in real time.

Voice is quickly becoming one of AI’s most important interfaces. Typing transformed how people interacted with computers. Natural conversation could transform it again.

With GPT-Live, OpenAI is betting that the future of AI won’t just be smarter responses. It will be conversations that feel almost indistinguishable from talking to another person.
