Google Pulls New Google Earth AI Image Tool Just One Day After Launch Over Policy Concerns

Google’s latest AI experiment has come to an abrupt halt. Less than 24 hours after introducing an AI-powered image generation feature in Google Earth, the tech giant rolled it back following concerns that the tool could be used to create misleading and harmful satellite imagery.

Google has rolled back its newly launched AI image generation feature for Google Earth only a day after its debut, citing concerns that some users were creating images that violated the company’s policies. The feature, powered by Google’s Nano Banana 2 AI model, allowed users to generate realistic satellite-style images of real-world locations using simple text prompts.

The tool was initially designed to help users visualise ideas by combining Google Earth’s satellite imagery, aerial photography and 3D mapping data with generative AI. Users could zoom into any location, click “Create Image” and describe what they wanted to see, with the AI producing highly realistic visuals in seconds.

While many geospatial professionals praised the feature’s creative potential, problems emerged almost immediately. Researchers and open-source intelligence experts demonstrated that the tool could generate convincing images of events that never happened. Some users created fake bomb craters, fictional refugee camps, imaginary nuclear facilities and other fabricated scenes that appeared strikingly realistic when placed on genuine geographic locations.

The demonstrations quickly raised concerns about misinformation.
Journalists, investigators and humanitarian organisations often rely on Google Earth to verify images during wars, natural disasters and other breaking events. Experts warned that AI-generated satellite images could make it far more difficult to distinguish authentic evidence from fabricated content.

In response, Google announced that it was temporarily removing the feature. The company stressed that the generated images existed separately from the platform’s official satellite imagery. However, critics argued that screenshots shared on social media could still spread misinformation before anyone checked whether they were AI-generated.

The incident highlights one of the biggest challenges facing generative AI. As image-generation tools become increasingly realistic, technology companies are finding it harder to balance innovation with public trust. Even with watermarking and safety filters, preventing harmful or misleading content remains a significant challenge.

This is not the first time Google has paused an AI feature after public criticism.
The company has previously adjusted or withdrawn AI products to improve safeguards before wider deployment. The rapid rollback of the Google Earth tool shows how quickly AI products can face scrutiny when they interact with trusted sources of information.
