Claude Code subscribers will now see an increase in costs when using Anthropic’s coding assistant with OpenClaw and other third-party tools. Starting April 4, subscribers can no longer use their Claude subscription limits for these integrations and will need to pay separately through a pay-as-you-go system.
While the change begins with OpenClaw, it is expected to extend to all third-party tools soon. Anthropic’s head of Claude Code, Boris Cherny, explained that subscriptions weren’t designed for heavy use of these external tools, and the update is intended to manage growth sustainably.
The timing follows OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger joining Anthropic competitor OpenAI, with OpenClaw continuing as an open source project under OpenAI’s support. Steinberger noted that discussions with Anthropic delayed the increased pricing by only a week, highlighting the timing as notable given recent feature changes.
Cherny emphasized that the update is about engineering limits rather than a stance against open source, and full refunds are available for subscribers affected by the change.
What this means is that users relying on third-party tools for coding assistance should anticipate slightly higher costs and plan accordingly as Anthropic adjusts its service limits.
