The Federal Government of Nigeria has made a major move to change how it manages its solid minerals, like gold, coal, and iron ore. Nigeria has officially joined hands with the Republic of Türkiye (formerly known as Turkey) to bring advanced digital technology into the country’s mining industry.
The two countries signed a special business agreement, known as a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), at the Istanbul Natural Resources Summit in Türkiye.

Why Nigeria is Teaming Up with Türkiye

Nigeria is rich in valuable underground minerals, but for a long time, the mining sector has faced big challenges. These include a lack of clear data, a slow paper-based system, and illegal mining.

Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, explained that Türkiye has advanced technical knowledge that Nigeria needs. By working together, Nigeria plans to use Turkish technology to fix these problems in several ways:

• Digital Mining Licenses: Moving from slow paperwork to a modern, online computer system to give out mining licenses. This will make it much faster and fairer for companies to apply for permission to mine.

• High-Tech Search Tools: Using advanced digital tools and satellites to find exactly where valuable minerals are hidden underground.

• Better Tracking: Using digital networks to monitor mining sites across the country. This will help the government spot illegal mining activities and stop revenue losses before they happen.

• Staff Training: Turkish experts will train Nigerian mining officers to use these new digital tools and systems effectively.

Over the last few years, Nigeria has been working hard to clean up its mining image. The government even started a special security group called the Mining Marshals to chase away illegal miners and recover stolen mining sites.

Minister Alake noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is fully supporting this new tech partnership because it makes Nigeria a better place for international business. Because of these changes, foreign companies can now easily protect their investments and take their legal profits back home without stress.

What the Partnership Means for the Future

The government wants mining to become a major source of income and jobs for Nigerians, reducing the country’s heavy reliance on oil money.

Türkiye’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, praised Nigeria’s new efforts. He stated that Turkish companies are highly interested and completely ready to invest heavily in Nigeria’s mining, energy, and gas sectors because the business environment is becoming safer and more transparent.
