As global energy demands reach historic highs and coastal industrial hubs struggle to decarbonize, a novel maritime technology venture is bringing nuclear power directly to the water’s edge. Officially stepping out of stealth on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, maritime nuclear energy startup Bluecore Energy announced that it has closed a $10 million pre-seed funding round. Founded by former Uber Freight executive Kofi Asante, the venture aims to commercialize floating nuclear power platforms by installing small modular reactors (SMRs) onto specialized ocean barges. By taking proven nuclear technology and miniaturizing it for maritime deployment, the company intends to deliver zero-emission, off-grid electrical power directly to energy-starved commercial ports, coastal communities, and power-hungry artificial intelligence data center facilities.

The technical core of  Bluecore Energy is building centers on a mobile, closed-loop power generation system anchored on heavy-duty barges. Rather than inventing untested atomic science, the startup utilizes traditional water-cooled nuclear reactor designs that have operated safely across commercial and naval marine fleets for more than seven decades. Steam generated by the compact reactor drives a heavy turbine to generate electricity, delivering an initial power capacity of 10 megawatts per barge, enough to power roughly 15,000 homes or a major maritime port facility. The floating platforms are completely self-contained, requiring refueling only once every few years, and can be towed directly to coastal locations before connecting to onshore electrical grids via heavy-duty subsea cables. To ensure safety, Bluecore’s design incorporates redundant defense-in-depth engineering, enclosing uranium fuel inside thick steel pressure vessels wrapped in concrete shielding and water-cooled containment barriers.

Addressing the physical context of this technology as it takes root, Bluecore Energy has established its operational headquarters directly inside the Port of Long Beach, California, making it the first small modular reactor firm physically based inside a major U.S. shipping port. This location allows the engineering team to conduct real-world hardware and hydrodynamic testing in an active maritime corridor. Furthermore, because the reactor platforms float on water, they can be relocated across international waterways without creating permanent onshore real estate footprints or drawing precious freshwater resources away from local municipal communities.

Following its formal funding announcement on July 21, 2026, Bluecore revealed that it has already acquired its first physical barge, secured a dedicated port terminal, and constructed an electric test reactor pressure vessel to simulate water-flow mechanics. With a technical team composed of former SpaceX, Blue Origin, and U.S. Navy nuclear submarine veterans, the company plans to use the fresh capital to accelerate component fabrication and begin preliminary regulatory licensing evaluations.
