SoftBank secures an upsized $11.87 billion bank loan to fuel its massive multi billion dollar investment push into OpenAI.

SoftBank Group has secured an upsized $11.87 billion bank loan to fuel its multi billion dollar investment push into American artificial intelligence creator OpenAI.

Known across global financial markets as one of the largest technology investors in the world, the Tokyo based corporate conglomerate arranges large debt financing deals to purchase ownership stakes in leading digital software firms.

By expanding its borrowing capacity beyond initial targets, the company ensures it has cash ready to fund massive artificial intelligence projects, purchase advanced computer hardware, and support complex digital software platforms.

The massive financial deal was officially confirmed by global business news outlet Bloomberg on Monday, September 14, 2026.

According to corporate insiders tracking the agreement, SoftBank finalized the 2 year credit line after receiving financial backing from a group of around twenty international banking institutions.

The initial borrowing goal was set at $10 billion , but overwhelming interest from commercial lenders allowed company leaders to raise the total loan size to nearly $12 billion dollars.

The primary reason SoftBank is borrowing so much money right now is that building modern artificial intelligence tools requires enormous amounts of capital.

Running smart digital assistants requires expensive computer servers, specialized microchips, and massive power supplies. Led by billionaire founder Masayoshi Son, the investment firm has committed to placing nearly $65 billion into OpenAI by October.

To make sure it can pay for these giant equity purchases without draining its daily cash reserves, SoftBank works with global banks to secure large, multi year loans.

Detailing how strong support from global financial institutions allowed the company to raise more money than originally planned, business reporters tracking the transaction confirmed that “SoftBank Group secured an $11.87 billion loan to support its investment in U.S. artificial intelligence firm OpenAI, people familiar with the matter said, up from its earlier target of $10 billion”.

Explaining that the financial agreement was locked in following strong commitments from international lenders, financial analysts reviewing the debt package noted that “the Japanese conglomerate sealed the 2 year facility last week, attracting commitments from around 20 banks”.

Highlighting the massive total scale of the investment firm’s financial pledge toward American artificial intelligence technology, market trackers familiar with the corporate funding plan added that “SoftBank, founded and led by billionaire Masayoshi Son, is slated to invest close to $65 billion in OpenAI by October”.

By securing nearly twelve billion dollars in fresh bank loans, SoftBank is doubling down on its bet that artificial intelligence will drive the future of global technology.

Funding major software leaders ensures that essential capital continues to flow into research and development, helping build smarter computer tools for businesses and everyday users around the world.
