The chief executive officer of artificial intelligence developer Anthropic, Dario Amodei, has publicly compared the growing technology race between the United States and China to the nuclear tensions of the Cold War.

Speaking during a televised interview and releasing a detailed public safety essay, the tech executive warned that smart computer software is improving so quickly that safety research is falling behind.

To stop dangerous software from getting out of control, he called on global leaders to intentionally slow down the rapid development of powerful computer models while negotiating international safety rules with foreign nations.

The high-level technology warnings were published in a public essay titled “We Must Pace the Frontier” on Saturday, September 12, 2026, and broadcast during an interview with CBS Sunday Morning on September 13.

During his media appearance, Amodei laid out a 2 part global strategy to handle rising competition. First, he urged Western governments to enforce strict limits on sending powerful computer chips to foreign rivals, calling hardware access the main factor that determines a nation’s computing strength.
