NNPC Begins Self-Service Fuel Sales, Allows Motorists Buy through Mobile App

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited(NNPCL) has introduced self-service fuel pumps at selected NNPC Retail stations, allowing motorists to purchase and dispense petrol themselves through a mobile application.

The initiative is part of NNPC Retail’s plan to deploy between 50 and 70 smart self-service stations across Nigeria within the next six months.

Under the new system, motorists can select the amount of petrol they want, pay through the NRL Fuel App and use a code generated after payment to activate the pump.

NNPC Retail explained the process in a guide shared on its X account on Friday.

Motorists using the facility are required to download the NRL Fuel App, select “Fuel Purchase” and choose their preferred fuel type.

They can then select an NNPC Retail station offering the service. Participating stations are identified by a green “Self-Serve” badge on the app.

After selecting a station, the customer enters the amount to be spent on fuel and completes payment through the app’s wallet.

Once the transaction is successful, the app generates a digital receipt containing an Order ID, an eight-digit Self-Service Code and a QR code.

At the fuel pump, the motorist enters the eight-digit code on the terminal and presses the hash key to validate the transaction.

The customer can then pick up the nozzle and dispense the quantity of fuel purchased.

The self-service option is currently available only at selected NNPC Retail stations as the company gradually expands the system.

NNPC Executive Vice President, Downstream, Mumuni Dagazau, said the initiative was part of the company’s plan to transform conventional filling stations into broader energy and mobility hubs.

At a newly commissioned smart station on Bill Clinton Drive, Airport Road, Abuja, NNPC Retail Executive Director, Retail Operations and Mobility, Shettima Baba-Kukawa, said customers could complete their transactions using their phones and dispense the exact amount of fuel purchased.

The company said the smart stations would combine conventional petrol sales with other energy and mobility services, including electric vehicle charging, liquefied petroleum gas and compressed natural gas.

NNPC Retail is expected to expand the self-service model to more stations as part of its wider rollout of smart filling stations across the country.
