NNPC and NITDA Forge Tech Alliance: Transforming Nigeria’s Oil Giant into a Digital Energy Leader

In a move to reposition Nigeria’s most vital industry, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) have formed a strategic alliance to drive digital transformation.

Formalized during a meeting on April 17, 2026, between NITDA Director-General Malam Kashifu Inuwa and the Director of NNPC’s Research, Technology and Innovation (RTI) Unit, Olatomiwa Olaniyi, the partnership marks a deliberate shift from traditional resource dependence toward a technology-led operational model.

During the engagement, Inuwa emphasized that the NNPC must transition from its “traditional dependence on the exploitation of oil and gas resources” to a focus on the “exploration of technologies.” This transformation centers on integrating emerging tools to modernize the industry that is the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Machine Learning to analyze geological data and optimize production, Internet of Things (IoT) for  real-time monitoring of infrastructure and predictive maintenance and robotics to enhance safety and efficiency in high-risk operational environments.

A core objective of the collaboration is to foster Digital Sovereignty by reducing reliance on foreign proprietary solutions and prioritizing indigenous innovation.

NITDA will also support the NNPC in connecting with Nigeria’s rapidly growing startup ecosystem. This includes incubation programs and innovation challenges designed to produce practical, locally-developed solutions tailored specifically to the oil and gas value chain. The partnership will leverage this regulatory framework to scale tech ventures from prototypes into commercially viable products.   Special initiatives will target young Nigerians, including NYSC members, to develop technical skills and solve real-world industry problems.

This collaboration is expected to play a critical role in achieving the targets set out in the NNPC 2026 Work Plan, which includes increasing national production and attracting over $60 billion in new investments by 2030. By aligning with NITDA’s mission to foster digital literacy and indigenous technology, the NNPC is positioning itself not just as a resource company, but as a global energy-tech leader.

“Collaboration among government agencies, industry players, and the technology ecosystem remains critical to achieving sustainable innovation.” — Olatomiwa Olaniyi, Director of NNPC RTI Unit. Mr. Olaniyi made these remarks while presenting the mandate of the RTI Unit to the Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa. He emphasized that this tripartite collaboration—linking government regulators (NITDA), industry giants (NNPC), and the local startup ecosystem is the primary engine for creating solutions that will drive operational excellence and revenue growth across Nigeria’s upstream, gas, and power sectors.
