Nigeria Launches NEDI: A Smart Way to Track Students and Improve Schools

The Federal Government of Nigeria has started a new project to change how schools and students are managed. This new system is called the Nigeria Education Data Infrastructure (NEDI).It uses Smart Technology (Artificial Intelligence or AI) to keep track of students and schools all over the country.

Before this, school records in Nigeria were scattered and hard to find. Now, NEDI will bring all that information together into one secure, central home.

What is NEDI?

NEDI is a giant digital database. It acts as a single, trusted source of truth for Nigeria’s education system. It connects data from primary schools all the way up to universities.

So far, the government has already registered:

• Over 32 million students

• More than 220,000 schools across 21 states

How Does It Work?

Every student will get a special number called the National Learner Identity Number. This number is linked to their National Identification Number (NIN).

Once a student has this number, the government can safely see their academic history from the day they start school until they graduate and look for a job.

Why is NEDI Important?

Using AI and smart tracking helps solve big problems in education:

• Stopping Exam Cheating: Because every student has a unique ID linked to their real identity, it will be much harder for people to fake results or cheat during big exams like WAEC and NECO.

• Helping Students Who Drop Out: The AI technology can look at information to see why some children stop going to school. This helps the government step in and help them stay in class.

• Fixing School Buildings: From a single screen (or dashboard), leaders can instantly see which schools need new classrooms, more computers, better teachers, or even clean water.

• Smart Spending: Instead of guessing where to send money, the government can use real facts to spend money where students need it the most.

“With this platform, we can know the number of students, teachers’ qualifications, available classrooms, computers, and even water facilities in any school from one dashboard.”— Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education

Nigeria currently faces a big challenge with millions of children who are not in school. By using NEDI, the government hopes to build a clearer, more honest picture of education. This will ensure that every child no matter where they live gets a fair chance to learn, grow, and succeed in the future.
