From Micro-Lending to Market Leader: The Leadership Behind Parallex Bank’s Historic Evolution

The story of Parallex Bank is unique in Nigerian financial history. Unlike most commercial banks that started from scratch or through mergers, Parallex holds the distinction of being the first institution in Nigeria to successfully transition from a Microfinance Bank to a full-fledged Commercial Bank.

At the heart of this transformation is a leadership team led by the Managing Director, Dr. Olufemi Bakre, and the Board Chairman, Dr. Adeola Phillips.

Dr. Olufemi Bakre: The MD/CEO and Visionary

While Parallex is a corporate entity, Dr. Olufemi Bakre is the primary architect of its commercial banking era. Appointed as the pioneer Managing Director in May 2020, he brought over 35 years of deep-sector experience to orchestrate the bank’s “limitless” rebranding.

He had his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Banking & Finance from the University of Lagos; Alumnus of London Business School. He held senior leadership roles at MBC International, First Bank (Group Head), and FCMB (Executive Director).

Under his tenure, Parallex officially launched as a commercial bank in January 2022, positioning itself as a “challenger bank” that combines the agility of a fintech with the security of a traditional bank.

Dr. Adeola Phillips: The Strategic Chairperson

The board is chaired by Dr. Adeola Phillips, a seasoned professional who provided the strategic oversight necessary for the bank’s transition. She is a specialist in healthcare management and corporate strategy, bringing a diversified perspective that moved the bank toward a more “consumer-centric” model. Phillips was instrumental in steering the bank through the rigorous Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) licensing process, ensuring the bank met the N10 billion minimum capital requirement for a regional commercial license. Her mandate was to create a bank that drives “convenient and efficient commerce” specifically for the underserved SME and retail sectors.

The “founder” identity of Parallex is rooted in its 2008 origin as Parallex Microfinance Bank.

1. 2008–2013: Established as a Unit Microfinance Bank, it quickly scaled to a National Microfinance Bank license.

2. 2021 Transition: After a decade of profitability as a micro-lender, the board made the unprecedented move to apply for a commercial license.

3. 2022 Rebirth: The bank re-emerged with a “Limitless” theme, offering unique perks like zero-fee accounts and highly competitive interest rates to disrupt the market.

The founding team’s background in microfinance gave them a unique advantage: an understanding of the “bottom of the pyramid.” While other commercial banks struggle to reach rural areas and small traders, Parallex built its foundation there.

“We didn’t just change our license; we changed our mindset. We are here to prove that a bank can be both highly profitable and genuinely helpful to the average Nigerian.” — Dr. Olufemi Bakre

By leveraging Bakre’s veteran banking expertise and Phillips’ strategic governance, Parallex Bank has successfully carved out a niche as the “sophisticated disruptor” of the Nigerian financial ecosystem.
