FICAN Conference to Evaluate Banking Recapitalisation and Nigeria’s Fintech Growth

The Finance Correspondents Association of Nigeria (FICAN) has scheduled its 2026 Annual Conference to convene financial sector leaders, regulators, and policy experts in Lagos.

The Finance Correspondents Association of Nigeria (FICAN) is hosting a big financial conference in Lagos on September 19 and 20, 2026. Top government officials, bank bosses, economic expertsband tech innovators will gather to talk about how recent economic changes are affecting Nigeria’s financial system and everyday business.

The two-day event will take place at Orchid Hotels in Lekki, Lagos. Attendees will focus on how to build on these changes to boost economic growth, attract investment, bring banking services to more people and make the country’s money system safer.

This gathering is happening as Nigerian banks work to raise more capital, the government rolls out new tax laws and tech platforms keep changing how people send money and access financial services.

Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Deputy Governor Dr. Muhammad Sani Abdullahi will be giving the main speech while UBA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Oliver Alawuba will speak as the special guest.

The programme will feature panel discussions involving representatives of the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), the Fintech Association of Nigeria, Opay Digital Services Limited, Providus Bank and the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN).

The panel discussions will look closely at the main challenges and opportunities coming from bank recapitalization, new tax laws, and the fast growth of financial technology in Nigeria.

FICAN Chairman Chima Titus Nwokoji noted that the conference gives leaders a practical space to review these changes and find real solutions to keep the economy growing.

Nwokoji emphasized that the conference comes at a critical time for Nigeria’s economy, as major changes in banking capital, tax laws, and financial technology continue to reshape how financial services work across the country.

Nwokoji explained that the conference aims to bring top decision-makers together to measure the progress made so far and agree on steps to keep the economy stable.

He added that the goal is to keep investors confident, support tech innovation and make sure these economic changes actually help everyday businesses and citizens.

FICAN brings together around 150 journalists and editors from newspapers, TV, radio and online news. For 36 years, the group has focused on reporting accurate financial news and encouraging public discussion on economic policies.

Nwokoji stated that the association will keep using this annual meeting to bring leaders together to discuss major changes in the financial sector and the broader economy.

Organizers noted that the conference will focus on three main topics: how requiring banks to hold more capital affects the broader economy, how new tax laws impact everyday businesses and investors and how financial technology and money apps continue to transform everyday banking services.

The conference will also explore the future of digital payments, financial inclusion, capital markets, insurance growth, foreign investment and long-term economic stability. To cover these areas, the two-day program will include keynote addresses, panel discussions and Q&A sessions featuring experts from banking, insurance, capital markets, fintech and government agencies.

Organizers stated that the event aims to review recent economic changes while encouraging different parts of the financial sector to collaborate more effectively. FICAN expects the conference to conclude with a clear report offering practical recommendations to the government, regulatory bodies and industry leaders on how to support long-term investment, increase banking access and build a stronger financial system.

Outside the formal sessions, the conference will serve as a networking hub for government leaders, investors, bank executives, tech founders and journalists to share ideas and partner on new projects. FICAN highlighted that Nigeria is at a turning point in its economic story where major changes in banking, taxes and technology are opening up fresh opportunities while creating new challenges to manage.

FICAN pointed out that these updates to banking rules, taxes and digital technology could greatly improve Nigeria’s economic future if handled correctly. The group emphasized that government leaders, banks and investors must work closely together to ensure these changes succeed and support long-term national growth.

Over the years, the annual FICAN conference has grown into one of Nigeria’s top forums for discussing key financial policies and economic growth.

This year’s event gives leaders across the industry a space to track progress, tackle ongoing problems and map out practical steps to build stronger banks, attract new investment, reach unbanked citizens and keep the economy moving forward.
