ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming has given a strict direct order to his company’s artificial intelligence research teams to completely stop using shortcut copying techniques when building their artificial intelligence models. Reports coming out of Beijing on Thursday, August 6, 2026, revealed that during an internal all-hands meeting with ByteDance’s core AI division, known as the Seed team, the tech billionaire made it clear that the company must build its technology from scratch rather than piggybacking on top smart models built by global rivals.

The controversy centers around a popular practice in the tech industry known as AI distillation. To understand this in simple terms, distillation is like a student who refuses to read textbooks to understand a subject, choosing instead to copy assignments directly from the smartest classmate in order to score quick high marks on tests. The ByteDance founder admitted that refusing to use distillation means the company’s flagship Doubao AI model might temporarily lag behind aggressive domestic Chinese rivals like DeepSeek, Kimi, and Qwen, but insisted that long-term original research is far more important than chasing quick short-term rankings.

Beyond the technical arguments, heavy political pressure from international government authorities is playing a massive role in this decision. In recent weeks, AI distillation has turned into a major political battlefield between Washington and Beijing. United States officials and American tech labs recently accused several Chinese startups of secretly extracting data from top American models to build competitive products overnight. United States Treasury officials even warned that firms caught harvesting intellectual property could face harsh financial sanctions or international trade blacklists.

Because ByteDance already faces constant political scrutiny in Washington over its popular short-video platform TikTok, the company simply cannot afford another major political scandal. If American regulators accuse ByteDance of stealing data from United States artificial intelligence systems, lawmakers could use the issue to push through harsher bans or restrictions against TikTok. By strictly banning distillation across all internal projects and enforcing API call audits, Zhang Yiming is protecting ByteDance from regulatory crossfire while forcing his team to own their technical journey.

To ensure staff members obey the new order, ByteDance has strengthened internal monitoring tools to track data inputs and block developers from feeding foreign model outputs into their training systems. As competition in global artificial intelligence reaches white-hot levels, ByteDance’s decision to reject easy shortcuts proves that building lasting tech strength requires patience, heavy discipline, and doing the hard work yourself.
