Walter Akpani is a prominent Nigerian banker and the Managing Director/CEO of Providus Bank. With over 30 years of experience, he is widely regarded as a specialist in bank start-ups and institutional restructuring.  

Early Life and Education

Walter Akpani was born in Ibusa, a town in the Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria.

. Undergraduate Studies: He attended the University of Benin (UNIBEN), which is also where he met his wife, Winifred.

• Academic Foundation: He holds a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Finance from the University of Strathclyde in Scotland.

Professional Career & The “Start-Up Tactician”

Before founding his own bank, Akpani served as a pioneer staff member and key executive at several of Nigeria’s most significant financial institutions during their formative years:  

• NatWest Bank (UK): Gained early international banking exposure.  

• ICON Stockbrokers/Merchant Bank: Served as a pioneer staff member and led Treasury operations.  

• Commercial Trust Bank: Part of the core team responsible for restructuring the institution.  

• Standard Trust Bank (now UBA): Served as a pioneer staff member and Group Head of the Financial Institutions department.  

• Platinum Bank (now Keystone Bank): Served as a pioneer staff member and eventually rose to the position of Vice President, Institutional Banking.  

The Road to Providus Bank

In a move that defined his entrepreneurial spirit, Akpani disengaged from Platinum Bank to establish United Mortgage Bank Limited. Under his leadership, the mortgage bank successfully “metamorphosed” into Providus Bank, which was granted a regional commercial banking license by the CBN in 2016.

• “Future Forward” Vision: Akpani is known for his “niche banking” focus, prioritizing digital innovation, speed, and customized business solutions over traditional mass-market competition.  

• The Unity Bank Merger (2024): He was the primary architect behind the strategic merger between Providus Bank and Unity Bank, a move backed by a ₦700 billion CBN support loan aimed at creating a more resilient national financial powerhouse.  

• Recognition: His contributions were recognized when he was named The Sun Banker of the Year and was listed among the Top 10 CEOs in Nigeria.  

Personal Life & Interests

• Family: He is married to Dame Winifred Akpani, the founder and CEO of Northwest Petroleum & Gas Company. Together, they are considered one of Nigeria’s most influential “corporate power couples.”  

• Hobbies: He is an avid tennis player and is actively involved in the development of youth tennis in Nigeria.
