WhatsApp Locked 60% of Users Out Monday

Meta confirmed an automated moderation bug flagged legitimate accounts. Most should be restored within 24 hours.

WhatsApp users in the United States were suddenly locked out of the app on Monday, August 3, after a bug in Meta’s moderation system incorrectly flagged legitimate accounts.

The company confirmed the issue and said it is working to restore access. Most affected accounts should be back online within 24 hours.

What Happened

Reports started around 8:00 PM IST on Monday. When users opened WhatsApp, they saw a screen that said:

_“Your account activity and device info is being checked to make sure it follows our Terms of Service. We’ll notify you of the result typically within 24 hours.”_

The message also linked to help guides on “responsible usage” and “compromised accounts,” leaving many confused.

On X and Threads, US users said they were booted out without warning. Many rely on WhatsApp for work, customer messages, and group chats.

“My WhatsApp account was suddenly disabled without any warning. I only use the official app, and my work depends on WhatsApp. Please help,” one user posted on X.

What Meta Says

Meta told TechCrunch the lockouts were caused by an automated moderation bug. The system, designed to catch spam and abuse, mistakenly flagged legitimate accounts.

A WhatsApp spokesperson said:
“While the team constantly works to stay ahead of bad actors and ban abusive accounts to keep the platform safe, sometimes we get this wrong, and if we do, we try to fix it as quickly as possible to get people back to chatting.”

The company did not share how many US accounts were impacted. WhatsApp has more than 3 billion monthly active users globally.

How to Get Access Back

WhatsApp says most accounts are being restored automatically. If you’re still locked out:
1.  Update WhatsApp to the latest version in the App Store or Google Play Store
2.  Tap “Request a Review” on the ban screen if available
3.  Wait up to 24 hours — that’s the timeframe listed in the app
4.  Don’t uninstall the app immediately to avoid losing chat backups

Meta said it is adding additional checks to prevent the same mistake from happening again.

While iMessage and SMS dominate in the US, WhatsApp is widely used by small businesses for customer service, by creators running communities, and by millions who message family and friends abroad.

An automated lockout disrupts those workflows with no warning.
