WhatsApp introduces multiple passkeys, full passwords for 2SV, and caller warnings to block account thieves and scammers.
Popular messaging app WhatsApp has rolled out a major security update that lets users save multiple passkeys, create stronger two step passwords, and spot fake phone callers before answering.
Under the new account protection features, everyday users can now link face scans or fingerprint locks across both Android and iPhone devices simultaneously.
At the same time, the app is replacing simple six digit security codes with full passwords that use numbers, letters, and special symbols, making it much harder for internet thieves to break into private chat accounts.
The global safety upgrade was officially announced on August 25, 2026, as Meta confirmed that over one billion people currently use passkeys to open their chat profiles.
The fresh security tools are rolling out worldwide inside the app settings menu. Android phone owners are also receiving a special call screen tool that shows extra caller details, including the country an unknown phone number is calling from and whether the caller shares any mutual chat groups.
The main reason for these security changes is that online scammers regularly try to hijack WhatsApp accounts using trick messages and fake phone calls. Traditional six-digit security codes like “123456” are easy for cybercriminals to guess or trick victims into revealing.

By allowing users to lock their accounts with biometric passkeys like fingerprints and complex passwords, WhatsApp ensures that even if a hacker steals a temporary SMS code, they still cannot gain access to private messages or personal photos.
Explaining why upgrading old security codes to full passwords keeps account owners safe from hackers, WhatsApp security representatives stated, “Two step verification is an extra protection layer that helps prevent someone from taking over your account, even if they get hold of your one time passcode”.
Urging users to ditch simple numeric pins in favor of complex security phrases, WhatsApp official updates emphasized, “Until now it was a six digit PIN, we’ve now upgraded it to a full password: longer, alphanumeric, and even with special ch@racters to make it harder to guess. If you’ve been using ‘123456,’ this is your sign to upgrade”.
Detailing how showing extra country and group details on incoming calls helps stop phone fraud, the messaging company noted, “Scammers rely on urgency, now you can take a beat with some more info before answering”.
By adding multiple passkeys, stronger passwords, and unknown caller warnings, WhatsApp is making chat accounts significantly safer for everyone.
