US regulators probe Nvidia’s multi-billion licensing deal with Groq to check if the partnership skirts traditional buyout rules.

The United States Department of Justice has launched an official antitrust investigation into microchip giant Nvidia over its massive licensing agreement with artificial intelligence chip startup Groq.

Nvidia, which dominates the global market for computer processors used to build smart software, entered into a multi billion dollar agreement to use Groq’s specialized chip designs while taking on several of the startup’s top executives and engineering leaders.

However, government regulators are now closely examining whether Nvidia purposefully structured the partnership as a non-exclusive technology license, rather than a direct corporate takeover, to avoid triggering mandatory federal reviews that check for illegal business monopolies.

Explaining that the government investigation focuses on procedural rules rather than shutting down operations completely, legal analysts reviewing the antitrust probe noted that “the agency could fine the company if it finds Nvidia mishandled the deal, though it is unlikely to seek to unwind the transaction.”
