While public offices across Europe rely heavily on American software suites for daily tasks, government leaders in Switzerland are taking concrete steps to build a self managed digital workspace.

Designed to run core office tasks, including email processing, calendar scheduling, document writing, file storage, and video calls, the local platform will allow civil servants to handle public administration tasks without routing sensitive information through external commercial cloud systems.

Rather than cutting ties with commercial software overnight, Swiss authorities are establishing a parallel workspace that keeps government operations running smoothly during internet outages, software lockouts, or foreign legal disputes.

The strategic technology update was officially presented to the Swiss Federal Council on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, following a successful feasibility study.

Managed by the Swiss Federal Chancellery, the newly approved pilot program will begin rolling out to selected civil service departments.

Under current expansion plans, approximately three thousand government employees handling critical administrative workflows will gain access to the sovereign workplace environment by the end of 2027.

Parliament has allocated nine million Swiss francs to finance the initial setup phase and test how well open-source software supports daily public service needs.

Confirming that the federal administration is actively building a sovereign digital alternative to ensure uninterrupted public services, the Swiss Federal Chancellery noted that the project will provide a locally controlled open source workplace environment to reduce operational risks during major cloud disruptions.

Highlighting how browser based open source software successfully handled standard administrative tasks during initial testing, researchers involved in the feasibility assessment reported that test participants gave positive feedback on basic office functions, proving that open tools can support official government workflows.
