South Africa opens a new factory to build smart IRIS robot tutors aimed at helping teachers in 23,000 public schools.

South Africa has officially opened a brand new technology factory and showroom to build smart humanoid robot tutors, known as IRIS, to help students and teachers in classrooms.

The friendly looking electronic helpers are designed to work right beside human classroom instructors, using artificial intelligence and smart software to explain difficult lessons, mark schoolwork, and speak to children in local languages.

Project leaders hope that over time, these high tech machines will be placed in every public school across the nation, making it easier for children in all communities to get extra learning help.

The official launch took place at the Dube TradePort special economic zone in Durban, KwaZulu Natal, where government leaders and technology developers gathered to celebrate the new plant.

The Department of Science, Technology and Innovation welcomed the achievement, highlighting that making these smart machines locally will do more than just upgrade classrooms.

Over the next five years, building, fixing, and maintaining these educational robots is expected to create up to 20,000 new jobs for young technicians, factory workers, and computer experts.

The main reason for building these robot tutors is to give heavily overworked school teachers much-needed help in the classroom.

Managing large classrooms and marking hundreds of test papers every week leaves many teachers exhausted and short on time.

The IRIS robot features a digital screen on its chest and voice speakers so it can talk to learners, answer their everyday questions, and break down tough science and math problems into simple terms.

By letting the artificial intelligence handle basic grading and routine lesson repetition, human teachers get more time to focus on giving personal care and attention to their students.

Explaining how the smart technology supports busy school staff, inventor and Chief Executive Officer of BSG Technologies Thando Gumede stated,She is a tutor robot, which means that she is assisting our teachers. Our teachers are going through a lot. They work at school, then get back home and are still working; when are they getting their time with their families?”

Sharing the big long term vision for reaching every child in the country, Thando Gumede added, “Our goal is to see IRIS deployed in all 23,000 schools across South Africa, ensuring that every learner has access to quality educational support regardless of where they live”.

Describing the long journey it took to build these smart machines, Thando Gumede reflected on the hard work behind the project, saying, “I developed IRIS because I wanted to create a platform that helps teachers, administrators and learners work together more effectively. It took more than seven years of persistence, self funding and continuous development to reach this stage”.

By turning homegrown ideas into real physical products, South Africa is showing how artificial intelligence can make everyday school life better.

Putting these smart robot helpers into local classrooms ensures that teachers get the relief they need while giving millions of young students a fun, high-tech way to learn.
