London launches its first self driving taxis as Uber and artificial intelligence firm Wayve offer autonomous rides across the city.
Londoners can now hail self driving taxis for the very first time after ride sharing company Uber partnered with artificial intelligence firm Wayve to add autonomous cars to its passenger app.
Modified electric Ford Mustang vehicles equipped with smart computer software, cameras, and roof sensors are taking to the road to pick up real passengers across the busy capital.
Even though the onboard artificial intelligence controls the steering wheel, accelerator, and brakes automatically during trips, a trained human safety driver sits in the front seat to watch the road and take over if something unexpected happens.
This launch marks a major historic milestone for European transport, bringing cutting-edge computer-driven cars directly to everyday public commuters.
The commercial taxi service officially debuted across London streets on Thursday, September 3, 2026, following formal private hire license approvals granted by Transport for London.
Passengers booking a regular ride through the standard smartphone app may be matched with one of the initial fleet vehicles operating across the city.
Customers matched with an autonomous car receive an alert on their phone, allowing them to accept or decline the ride at standard pricing, with no option or prompt to leave a tip at the end of the trip.
The main reason this technology deployment is happening now is that artificial intelligence driving systems have advanced enough to handle extremely complex city streets filled with heavy traffic, double decker buses, cyclists, and pedestrians crossing ro
ads. Unlike rival self driving systems that rely on strict pre made digital maps, Wayve’s software uses end-to-end artificial intelligence models that learn how to drive much like a human brain does.
By introducing self driving technology gradually with human safety supervisors onboard, government leaders and tech companies aim to prove that autonomous cars can make city roads safer, reduce traffic congestion, and lower travel costs over time.
