Pope Leo has called for the development of artificial intelligence systems that promote peace and strengthen social bonds rather than deepen divisions in society.
The Pope made the call on Monday in a message to an artificial intelligence conference in Rome, warning that the rapid development of AI requires greater attention to its impact on humanity.
“In a world marked by conflict and division, the development of artificial intelligence calls for a vision inspired by wisdom and charity,” Leo said in the message.
He urged developers and policymakers to ensure that AI systems respect human dignity and contribute to stronger relationships among people.
According to him, AI should “serve the dignity of every person and strengthen the bonds that unite the human family.”
Leo has made the potential risks of artificial intelligence a major theme of his 16-month papacy, raising concerns about the technology’s ability to spread misinformation and contribute to conflict.

In a major document issued in May, the Pope warned that AI systems could prioritise conflict and urged the international community to establish regulations for the rapidly expanding industry.
Monday’s conference, titled “AI4Peace,” was held at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome.
Speakers included US economist Jeffrey Sachs, Rome city council president Svetlana Celli and Francisco Rojas Aravena, rector of the United Nations University for Peace in Costa Rica.
The Pope’s message was read to participants by Rev. Andrea Ciucci, chancellor of the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy for Life.
