Indian fintech pioneer Paytm expands beyond digital payments to build autonomous workplace AI agents for merchants and businesses.
Paytm is shifting its business strategy beyond simple digital payments to focus on building automated artificial intelligence agents for workplaces and shop owners.
Known for bringing QR code digital payments to millions of street vendors across India, the company is transforming into a provider of smart digital assistants.
Instead of only helping customers send money or pay store bills, Paytm is developing specialized computer programs that act like digital office employees.
These smart software helpers handle complex daily business chores, such as managing merchant inventories, organizing field sales routes, tracking customer loans, and automatically running customer service desks, without requiring human staff to click through multiple software apps.
The strategic business shift was highlighted in a major corporate update on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, as Paytm details its long-term technology roadmap.
Operating out of its headquarters near New Delhi, the company is building specialized in-house computer models trained specifically on Indian languages.
By shrinking massive computer programs into smaller, custom built local software models, Paytm has already automated internal tasks like debt collection, customer retention, and field sales guidance, allowing the company to cut outside vendor software expenses and pass those tools directly to corporate clients.
The core reason Paytm is pivoting toward artificial intelligence workplace tools now is to create new revenue streams after recovering from strict central bank regulations on its former banking division.
Basic digital payment processing has become a low profit commodity across global markets, forcing fintech operators to offer higher value services to keep business clients loyal.
Furthermore, executive leadership believes that personal computer apps will soon be replaced by automated digital assistants that talk directly to one another.
By equipping millions of registered shop owners with smart tools that boost daily sales and handle administrative tasks, Paytm aims to turn its massive merchant network into a dominant digital workplace platform.
Explaining how custom artificial intelligence models cut operational costs while automating complex business tasks, Chief Executive Officer of Paytm Vijay Shekhar Sharma stated that “we took a 200 billion parameters model, optimized it to a 4 billion parameters model made for Indian languages”, adding that using homegrown systems to handle calls and customer retention means “we remove the cost of the call center… Now, this is magic”.
Predicting that autonomous digital helpers will replace traditional mobile phone apps across global business markets over the next few years, Vijay Shekhar Sharma noted that “by the end of 2026, we will have super capable AI assistants, personal agents irresistibly good at performing all the tasks we do on our phones and computers”.
Emphasizing that the company’s core focus relies on using technology to boost overall productivity and revenue growth, Vijay Shekhar Sharma added that “customer, customer quality, monetization and monetization ability, these are the factors that multiply once you add the power of AI”.
By expanding beyond money transfers into automated workplace software, Paytm is taking big steps to modernize local commerce.
Equipping merchants with easy to use digital assistants ensures that everyday store owners can grow their businesses, save time, and operate smoothly in a fast changing digital economy.
