The National Identity Management Commission has dismissed claims that Nigeria’s National Identification Number database was breached, describing a viral video alleging unauthorised access to the system as false and unfounded.
NIMC also announced the launch of NINAuth, a new identity verification platform designed to strengthen the security of citizens’ personal data and give NIN holders greater control over how their information is shared.
The Commission made this known in a statement signed by its Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, on Tuesday, September 23, 2026.
The clarification followed the circulation of a video on WhatsApp and X which purported to show evidence of a breach of the NIN database containing the biometric and personal information of more than 100 million registered Nigerians.
NIMC said the video was a recycled claim that had previously circulated and been addressed in 2024, warning that the spread of unverified information could mislead the public and cause unnecessary panic.
“The Commission wishes to state, categorically, that this claim is false and unfounded,” NIMC said.
The Commission said the National Identity Management System is protected by a layered security framework designed in line with international standards.
It urged Nigerians to rely on its verified official channels for information concerning the National Identity Management System and NIN services.
Meanwhile, NIMC said NINAuth had been introduced as its official platform for identity authentication and integration with its backend infrastructure.

The platform provides verification services through web, application programming interface and mobile channels.
According to the Commission, NIN holders must expressly authorise the use of their information before it can be shared for Know Your Customer processes or other identity verification purposes.
NIMC said the platform can be used for identity verification in areas including SIM registration, passport and immigration services, tax administration and financial transactions.
It added that NINAuth is designed to enable verification without requiring organisations to access citizens’ raw NIN or full personal information, thereby strengthening privacy protection.
NIMC said the initiative is part of its obligations under the NIMC Act 2026 and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, which provide requirements for the collection, storage and sharing of personal data.
The Commission also said it would continue working with relevant security agencies to strengthen its systems and counter misinformation surrounding Nigeria’s national identity infrastructure.
