Moniepoint Launches Inaugural Engineering Mixer for African Fintech Builders

Financial technology company Moniepoint has brought together senior software engineers and technical leaders from across Nigeria’s fintech sector for its inaugural “Off the Record Engineering Mixer” in Victoria Island, Lagos.

The gathering brought together technical teams from prominent fintech firms including Flutterwave, Cowrywise and Nomba which are  to discuss the underlying infrastructure powering digital finance. Moving away from marketing presentations, the closed-door discussions focused on practical technical hurdles such as managing distributed systems at scale, handling point-of-sale (POS) network connections and responding to system outages.

A central theme of the event centered on how engineering teams manage payment failures, network downtime and the architectural trade-offs required to keep digital banking platforms running continuously.

Participants examined the realities of operating large-scale transaction networks, focusing on how technical teams can identify system failures early and minimize service interruptions. Engineers emphasized that because financial platforms rely on interconnected third-party systems such as telecom networks and central settlement switches designing infrastructure that tolerates localized failures is necessary for maintaining service reliability.

During the sessions, Moniepoint highlighted its engineering strategy for handling card payment processing and preventing accidental account debits when transactions fail.

Ayomide Kolawole, Engineering Manager for Card Payments at Moniepoint explained that building dependable payment systems requires analyzing every stage where a transaction could fail and establishing clear fallback protocols. He noted that the primary goal for engineering teams should extend beyond processing transactions quickly to ensuring that when a system issue occurs, everyday customers do not bear the financial or operational burden of that failure.

Moniepoint management noted that hosting peer-level engineering discussions reflects a belief that infrastructure challenges in African fintech are industry-wide issues rather than individual trade secrets.

By creating a forum for senior engineers across competing platforms to share operational insights and structural strategies, organizers aim to raise overall security and system stability across Nigeria’s broader digital finance ecosystem.
