The managing director of Airtel kenya Djibril Tobe comfirmed that this week Airtel has adjusted the completion timeline for its $150 million Nxtra data center in Tatu city shifting the target launch from early 2o27 to July 2027. “Construction is advancing steadily on what is expected to become East African’s largest data center by capacity, roughly ten times the size of any facility currently operating in the region” Tobe said. In September 2025, Airel broke ground on site and the revised timeline reflect the scope of build as it move to its next phase. Aimed at powering AI and cloud workloads across East Africa, the facility is designed around 44 magawatt of power capacity delivered in 22MW phase which will be built to support high density GPS-ready infrastruction. According to Tobe, various global techology companies including google and microsoft are already in discussions about hosting services on the platform once it becomes operation even though no partnership has been formally decided. Within Tatu City’s Special Economic Zone, the data center will draw power from a dedicated 135MVA substation with on site solar generation supplementing the supply. As the demand for cloud and data service continues to grow across East Africa, the project forms part of a broader push that position Kenya as the leading digital and AI infrastructure hub in the region.
