What does US order on Anthropic’s Latest Models, “Fable 5” and “Mythos 5” mean

Anthropic temporarily removed access to its most advanced Artificial Intelligence models, called Fable 5 and Mythos 5, to comply with the United States government blocking use by foreign nationals due to national security concerns. Anthropic said the easiest way to comply was to disable the models for everyone rather than try to separate foreign and non-foreign users.

The United States government, the Trump Administration, believed these models could potentially be misused, particularly for cybersecurity-related activities as the concerns for national security grows amidst the United States – Iran War tensions. Anthropic had to abruptly disable access to the models for all customers to comply with the order. Users reported being unable to access the models since Saturday.

The United States government in the time past had used export controls to restrict the sale of semiconductor chips that power these AI models, but not on these model themselves. These suggests that United States is starting to treat the most advanced AI systems like strategic technologies similar to the advanced military or semiconductor technology that power these chips.

This showed the significant effort by the United States to prevent foreign enemies from making use of American-Made AI Technology. It also raises questions about who gets access to these powerful AI models and whether governments can control its distribution across borders.

The United States government worries that this very powerful AI can aid people do things that normally require a lot of experience. Experts too, had warned that the model’s capabilities pose a great potential risk of cybercrimes.

The debate rages on the safety and risks involved in the use of AI, Anthropic acknowledged the risks involved creating such models though putting out that the company had introduced safeguards to prevent such abuses.

Many people think restrictions are necessary, while others are of the opinion that limiting access to these powerful models can slow innovation and unfairly exclude researchers and businesses around the world.
