Nigeria Launches New “GovGuide” AI Chatbot to Make Government Information Easy to Reach

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched a new artificial intelligence (AI) helper called GovGuide Nigeria.

This tool is designed to make it much easier for citizens to get trustworthy information about government services without having to read through complicated websites or visit offices in person.

To build this helpful tool, the government teamed up with Meta (the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp), a local tech company called Publica AI, and the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR).

What is GovGuide Nigeria?

GovGuide is a digital assistant that can answer questions about more than 35 federal ministries and over 60 government agencies.

Instead of searching through confusing government documents to figure out how to renew a passport, apply for a grant, or find a public service, Nigerians can now just ask the chatbot a direct question—the same way they would text a friend.

The best part? It works using both text and voice, meaning you can either type your question or speak it directly into your phone.

Two Big Reasons Why GovGuide is Special

The creators of GovGuide designed it specifically to fit the everyday lives of Nigerians by focusing on two main features:

1. It Speaks Local Languages

Many official government websites are only written in English, which can exclude millions of citizens. GovGuide fixes this language barrier by fully supporting four main languages:

• English

• Hausa

• Igbo

• Yoruba

A trader in Onitsha can ask a question in Igbo, or a farmer in Kano can ask in Hausa, and the AI will understand and reply in that same language.

2. It Works on WhatsApp and the Web

To use GovGuide, citizens do not need to download a heavy new application or buy an expensive device. It is available on a simple website and directly on WhatsApp—an app that over 50 million Nigerians already use daily.

Helping Every Nigerian Feel Included

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, explained that this project is all about ensuring technology works for every citizen, not just the highly educated.

“By deploying AI-powered tools in local languages and on platforms people already use daily, we are improving access to public services and also strengthening transparency, trust, and citizen engagement,” Dr. Tijani said.

Meta’s Head of Public Policy, Sade Dada, added that because the chatbot supports voice messages and local languages, it is incredibly helpful for people living in rural communities or those who have limited literacy and find it hard to read and write.

The intelligence behind GovGuide is powered by Meta’s advanced, open-source AI technology (called Llama). However, hundreds of Nigerian language experts and local tech developers were the ones who trained the system to speak and understand local dialects perfectly.

Ignatius Willie, the head of Publica AI, proudly stated that this project proves Africa has the talent to build its own digital future. “GovGuide Nigeria is proof that the next generation of public infrastructure for Africa can, and should, be built in Africa, in our own languages,” he said.

The chatbot is officially live and available for any Nigerian looking for quick, simple answers about government services.
