Phillips Oduoza: The CEO of Nova Bank Limited

Phillips Oduoza stands as a titan in the African financial landscape, with a career spanning over 38 years. As the founder and Chairman of NOVA Bank, he has moved beyond the traditional boundaries of banking to build a legacy defined by engineering precision and digital innovation.

Background and Education

Born in Owerri, Imo State, Oduoza’s journey began not in a boardroom, but in the field of engineering. He earned a B.Sc. with First Class Honours in Civil Engineering from the University of Lagos. Although he initially aimed for an active engineering career, he discovered a passion for business during his studies, eventually leading him to earn an MBA in Finance from the same institution. He later sharpened his leadership skills at the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Programme.

Banking Career
Phillips Oduoza has a distinguished career in the Nigerian banking sector, holding several high-level positions before founding NOVA Bank:

• Early Trainee: He started at International Merchant Bank in 1987 before joining Citibank in 1989 as part of its first set of executive trainees.

• Pioneer Status: In 1991, he became a pioneer staff member at Diamond Bank, where he eventually led both the Operations/Technology and Commercial/Retail wings as an Executive Director.

The UBA Era and Corporate Transformation

In 2004, Oduoza joined the board of Standard Trust Bank (STB). He played a pivotal role in the landmark merger between STB and United Bank for Africa (UBA), a move that reshaped African banking.

His leadership culminated in two highly successful terms as the Group Managing Director/CEO of UBA PLC. Upon his retirement in 2016, he was widely credited with expanding the bank’s footprint and solidifying its position as a Pan-African powerhouse.

NOVA Bank: A “New Thinking” Legacy

Rather than settling into a quiet retirement, Oduoza founded NOVA Merchant Bank in 2017. His vision was to address the gaps in wholesale and investment banking by applying what he calls “new thinking”.

Under his guidance as Chairman, the bank achieved several milestones:

• Rapid Evolution: Incorporated in May 2017, the bank began operations in 2018 and quickly gained a reputation for high profitability and strict corporate governance.

• The Phygital Model: Oduoza pioneered the “Phygital” approach—a seamless blend of physical branch presence and high-tech digital services designed to meet the needs of modern clients.

• Commercial Expansion: In July 2024, the bank reached a new peak by obtaining a license from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to transition into a National Commercial Bank.

Awards and Leadership

Oduoza’s influence extends into the infrastructure of the Nigerian economy. He has served on the boards of critical institutions like Interswitch Plc, the Nigeria Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS), and the Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG).

His commitment to excellence has earned him international acclaim, including being named the Africa investor (Ai) SRI 30 CEO of the Year in both 2013 and 2015. Today, Phillips Oduoza remains a central figure in ensuring that Nigeria’s financial sector is not only stable but also globally competitive.
