Apple Releases Security Update to Shield Older iPhones and iPads from DarkSword Exploits

Apple has rolled out a security update for older iPhones and iPads to defend against a leaked set of powerful hacking tools capable of stealing sensitive device data. The update, iOS 18.7.7 and iPadOS 18.7.7, extends critical protections to a wider range of devices.

The hacking toolkit, known as DarkSword, can compromise Apple devices running iOS 18.4 through 18.7 simply when a user visits a compromised website. The toolkit can steal messages, browser histories, location data, cryptocurrency, and more, sending the information to servers controlled by attackers.

DarkSword attacks have already appeared in targeted campaigns in countries including China, Malaysia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Ukraine. With the hacking tools now publicly available online, security experts warn that any attacker could exploit unpatched devices.

Apple says users running its latest iOS 26 update were already protected, and the new update ensures that those on older versions now receive critical safeguards. Many users had avoided updating due to complaints about iOS 26’s new “liquid glass” interface.

Customers with automatic updates enabled will receive the patch automatically, and Apple notes that its optional Lockdown Mode also helps defend against DarkSword attacks. According to Apple, no government spyware attacks have been reported against devices running Lockdown Mode.

This update ensures millions of users with older Apple devices remain secure from emerging threats without needing to upgrade to the latest iOS version.
